Flirting is the second in a planned semi autobiographical trilogy of films by Australian film-maker John Duigan.
The story revolves around Danny (Noah Taylor) and Thandiwe (Thandie Newton), set against the backdrop of an Australian boarding school in 1965.
It is during a school debate, where Danny pokes fun at rugby, and Thandiwe pokes fun at popular music, that they catch each other’s eye and befriend each other.
The film is both clever and manages to convey both a innocence and knowing all at the same time.
The soft interaction between the two main characters makes for a subtle love story, evolving from mere private school shenanigans.
I watched it last night and again this morning. I hadn’t seen it in about six years, so it was a sentimental treat! I highly recommend it!
