The Convergence of Race and Gender in Modern Black Performance

This call for papers is for a panel to be held at the MSA conference in Chicago, IL, Nov. 3-6, 2005.  As Houston Baker explains in  Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance performance plays a major role in  defining black

modernism.

While  Baker and others have theorized how performance impacts our understanding of  black modernism, this panel will consider how the convergence of race and gender  in performance expands the parameters of modern art and

literature.

Papers could explore any of the following themes:

Respectability

Kinship

Community

The Body

Language

History

Sexuality

Identity

Time

Space

Mobility
