The Convergence of Race and Gender in Modern Black Performance
This call for papers is for a panel to be held at the MSA conference in Chicago, IL, Nov. 3-6, 2005. As Houston Baker explains in Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance performance plays a major role in defining black
modernism.
While Baker and others have theorized how performance impacts our understanding of black modernism, this panel will consider how the convergence of race and gender in performance expands the parameters of modern art and
literature.
Papers could explore any of the following themes:
Respectability
Kinship
Community
The Body
Language
History
Sexuality
Identity
Time
Space
Mobility
