1. Your favourite song with the name of a city in the title or text.
“Land of Canaan” by the Indigo Girls. I love this band, and this song has so often defined my state when it comes to my love life. It amazes me that their music speaks to my life so clearly and specifically.
Well the meanings changed (for what it’s worth),
It’s just a senseless game.
I should think of love, but it’s fear every time I hear
Your heart strain.
It’s not the fallen man,
It’s not the call of time,
It’s just the London skyline
Telling me you’re not mine.
2. A song you’ve listened to repeatedly when you were depressed at some point in your life.
“Wild Is The Wind” by Nina Simone. That song just crawled inside me in 1997, and curled there like a weighty teardrop. It prompted buckets and buckets of tears for months and months.
3. Ever bought an entire album just for one song and winded up disliking everything but that song?
It has happened on occasion. This is mostly why I don’t buy albums on the strength of one song any more. I must say though, that I have more often found myself loving obscure, one hit wonder bands because of one song, so I won’t nitpick about odd lemons.
4. A song whose lyrics you thought you knew in the past, but about which you later learned you were incorrect.
Oooh yes! I am not immune to the human condition.
5. Your least favorite song on one of your favorite albums of all time.
“Staring Problem” from No Doubt, by No Doubt
6. Song you like by someone you find physically unattractive or otherwise repellent.
I would have to say any song by Al Jarreau, who creeps me directly out.
7. Your favorite song that has expletives in it that’s not by Liz Phair.
Too many, too many.
8. A song that sounds as if it’s by someone British but isn’t.
9. A song you like (possibly from your past) that took you forever to finally locate a copy of.
“Beyond The Sea”, by Bobby Darin. I fell in love with this song as a teenager and it took me something like five years to get a copy. I am still looking for Fairground Attraction’s, “A First Of A Million Kisses”, and Chaka Khan’s “Eternity” albums. Ooh… took me almost seven years to get a copy of Live’s “Throwing Copper” album.
10. A song that reminds you of spring but doesn’t mention spring at all.
“Ain’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing!)” by anyone who covers it and kicks ass…. all the old jazz greats, and a few of the youngwings have made respectable, toe popping, hand clapping, wild jiving, and singing along… if it can induce my heartbeat, I love this song for that.
11. A song that sounds to you like being happy feels.
12. Your favorite song from a non-soundtrack compilation album.
“The Ode To Joy” from Beethoven’s Greatest Hits, I pilfered from my Mummy.
13. A song from your past that would be considered politically incorrect now (and possibly was then).
“Fuck Tha Police” by Niggaz Wit Attitude
14. A song sung by an overweight person.
“Eternity” by Chaka Khan; “Through The Fire” by Chaka Khan
15. A song you actually like by an artist you otherwise hate.
“Toxic” by Britney Spears. I am ashamed to admit that millions of dollars in production values, and skillful manipulation of Spear’s barely tolerable voice, has made this song both catchy and insidious. :sigh: Like this, that & whatever also commented, I also like “Step In The Name Of Love” by R Kelly and am conflicted by it. In general find that R Kelly is one of those artists that can sing “doggy doo doo shite” and make it sound so sweet and fun, that you pick up and are singing before you know what is good for you, then you realise, you hate this person’s public persona, and you want to just scream, because corporate music allows talented idiot savants like R Kelly not only a platform, but distribution channels. Whew! RANT ATTACK!
16. A song by a band (whose members actually play instruments) that features three or more female members.
Sweet Honey In The Rock… their instruments are their voices, but they all play some form of percussion.
17. One of the earliest songs that you can remember listening to.
“Redemption Song” by Bob Marley & The Wailers
18. A song you’ve been mocked by friends for liking.
I don’t keep that kind of information in my mental rolodex.
19. A really good cover version you think no one else has heard.
“Who The Cap Fit” by Jomo Lord
20. A song that has helped cheer you up (or empowered you somehow) after a breakup or otherwise difficult situation.
“Friends In High Places” by Tuck & Patti
21. A song not in English — preferably a foreign-language version of an English-language hit.
No foreign language version, but a song in Portugues that I love is “Fanfarra Cubua-Le-Le)” by Sergio Mendes
Oh, that was fun.
Pinched From: this, that & whatever
