Black Women Writers Event

Writing with confidence – a workshop for Black Women Writers with Maureen Roberts (in conjunction with African Writers Abroad).
This free workshop aims to make women writers aware of and appreciate their own unique style of writing through exercises and discussion. Participants will learn and explore methods to begin and structure their writing.
Maureen Roberts has an MA in Education from Western Carolina University and an M.A. in creative writing, from Goldsmith College. Her first collection of poetry, My Grandmother Sings to Me, is published by Bogle L’Ouverture.

IN CONVERSATION: Nelson George Feature Lab
Writer, producer and cultural critic Nelson George heads up this
screenwriting lab for writers and producers developing their first
feature. Writers or project teams are invited to submit a one page
features synopsis to take part. Six projects will be selected and
invited to participate. Nelson George (executive producer of Everyday
People) is the author of nine non-fiction books and five novels and has
won a Grammy and an American Book Award. He co-wrote the films
“Strictly Business,” starring Halle Berry, and “CB4,” with Chris Rock,
who also starred. George served as consulting producer on the
EmmyR-winning “The Chris Rock Show” for HBO and has directed several
short films, including “To Be a Black Man,” narrated by Samuel L.
Jackson. Nelson George has also lead screenwriting workshops at the
Sundance Film Festival.

Judge a Book by its Cover is Spread the Word’s third annual writing
competition, which was launched in April and closed for entries on 31 July
2004. This event marks its culmination in a public prizegiving for the seven
winners across two age cateories.
We asked entrants to judge a book by its cover and fill the pages that were
sandwiched inside an imaginary book jacket.
The three judges, Mai Ghoussoub, David Mostyn and Luke Sutherland worked
hard to consider over a thousand entries in the two age categories.
Come along and hear the winners and those highly commended read their
entries at a showcase to mark the end of the competition in the Gallery at
Foyles Bookshop.
Listen out for the overall winner who will be featured on BBC London 94.9FM.
