Grammy-winning deejay and dancehall rapper Beenie Man was recovering well after undergoing surgery for injuries sustained in a car wreck in Jamaica, his manager said Friday.

While driving alone on a highway early Thursday morning, Beenie Man’s Hummer went off the road at a curve and flipped, police said.

The 30-year-old rapper broke two ribs and punctured a lung, but doctors at St. Joseph’s Hospital said Friday he had “improved significantly,” according to manager Patrick Roberts.

“His lungs are back to normal, and he is speaking,” Roberts said. “We hope he’ll be out of the hospital in a few days.”

Beenie Man, whose real name is Moses Davis, has been one of the biggest names in dancehall for nearly a decade. In 1998, he broke into U.S. charts with hit single “Who Am I” and accompanying album “Many Moods of Moses,” which became a minor hit in the United States.

In 1999, Beenie Man signed with Virgin Records. “Art and Life,” his first album for the company, won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2001.

His last album, “Tropical Storm,” was released by Virgin in late 2002.

Virgin shot a music video with Beenie Man two weeks ago of his song “Dude” from a new album which has not been released.

The song, the biggest hit in Jamaica last year, has not yet been distributed in the United States.
