The power of touch is never to be underestimated. From birth, without conscious recognition, we respond to – and flourish in – being touched by others. We find warmth, comfort and learn quickly the gentleness that lies beyond the stimulation we acquire from it.

It is well documented within the medical field from infancy onwards. Comparisons between new-borns have shown that little ones who have the benefit of human contact, skin on skin, fair much better in their overall health and development than those who have been left to themselves in their small incubators.

In my never-to-be-humble opinion, the laying of one’s hands on the flesh of another in the sensuous act of massage is, about as sexy and intimate as it gets. To feel tenseness being drained, in muscles rubbed and fingered, brings an overwhelming satisfaction in itself. When given the choice I prefer to do, rather being done to. Not that I don’t enjoy feeling the individual attention being given to my own body, but better to give than to receive, is my core belief. However, to be on either side of such touches is to experience the best of both worlds, and practising on yourself teaches you how much pressure is good, how much is too much, and so on.

In other words, it gets me off.
