Most of you know I am a rabid Mac Evangelist, and I will ever be so, however there are moment when I wish some of the software available for PC users would make the journey across.
My attempts to stream a unique stream of music into Second Life that is listen-able by all, are constantly thwarted by all manner of difficulties. I do not use ShoutCast and NiceCast frustrated me and is too difficult to configure.
What I really wanted was to be able to play my #160last.fm music in Second Life. I found hope when I came across blog post at eightbar telling of a little device that lets him tell people what he listened to last. This isn`t exactly what I wanted, and in any case as I discovered there was no SLURL for me to get one myself and the post is more than a year old.Then I found the the Last Sound System made by one of the Lindens. I thought this might actually work, and it eventually did, once I figured out how to create an md5 hash of my password. The Linden blog post does say that, “The biggest limitation is that I don#146t think multiple avatars can listen to the stream concurrently.”
And indeed this is so. When I asked a friend to listen with me, we heard two different things.
Then I stumbled upon this page. It gives you step by step instructions as to how to pick apart #160the protocols used for playing my last.fm stream without using the site or last.fm`s player. What it in fact gives you is a URL that you can then place in the “About Land > Media” tab of the SL client, and hence play the stream.
In this case this did allow me to take the prims off my land (I hit my Prim quota last night for the first time!), but the problem with concurrent users cropped up again. Other avatars don`t hear what I hear.
At any rate, Big Mami Radio is On Air! Now when you visit my place in SL, you`ll hear music as eclectic as I am… with NO COMMERICIALS!! What is great about this is that the more music I play in iTunes and that is playable through last.fm`s system will be added to the rotation. Now that I have a dancefloor in the Tribe Treehouse, you can come dance too, but will we be dancing to the same thing?
